What’s the Scoop on E-bikes?

July 2, 2019 by Lucy Greene

Ahhhh e-bikes, the ever-controversial subject in the bike industry and outdoor communities. Love them? Hate them? Either way, we’re here to give you the scoop on e-bikes in Summit County. The board of county commissioners recently made them legal on the rec path!

What types of bikes are allowed?

Class 1 E-Bikes: Pedal-assisted e-bikes without a throttle.

Where are they allowed

In Summit County, you can ride e-bikes on rec paths, roads, and moto trails.

What are the rules?

Aside from a speed limit of 20 miles per hour, e-bike riders should follow all traffic rules and trail/sidewalk etiquette. Be courteous, kind and respectful to other rec path users. Only pass when safe to do so, and be sure to communicate before passing. Ride single file and do not block the path if you need to stop.

PROS AND CONS

We have heard some concerns about e-bikes, including increased traffic on rec paths. Summit County rec paths do get crowded in the summer, and only time will tell how e-bikes will impact this. The best thing we can all do is slow down, be aware, and ride single file. Do your part to ride safely and responsibly!

One of our favorite things about e-bikes is improved commuting. It’s not always possible to go car-less but we can drive cars less! Deterred by a long commute? An e-bike can help you get there quicker and easier (just be sure to follow that speed limit). Tired of lugging a day’s worth of stuff around on your bike? Load up your coffee, smoothie, laptop bag, yoga mat, and more onto a cargo-style e-bike to make your commute easier! Tired of fighting for a parking spot at City Market? Hop on an e-bike for your next grocery run.

Another benefit that e-bikes offer is increased accessibility to riders with physical or neurological challenges. We love seeing more people on bikes!

WILDERNESS SPORTS MOBILE BIKE SHOP!

The Surly Big Easy is the best choice for carrying cargo. This summer, JT is making an effort to bike more and drive less. He fashioned a Kuat tray for after-work mountain bike rides, and can even carry a full mobile bike shop!

WHERE DO I GET ONE?

At Wilderness Sports of course! If you still aren’t sure about e-bikes, come test one out. Take it for a spin around the parking lot or rent it for a proper test ride.

Are you sold? Come talk to us about ordering one today! We can order any in-stock models from our bike brands. Here are a few of our favorites:
